Snow Storm?

January 27th, 2009

The meteorologists on tv are predicting that we would be getting up to a half a feet of snow tomorrow and that can cause a lot of closings for schools and even offices around the city. This isn’t the first time that they have predicted something to drastic and it rarely comes true so I am a little doubtful when it comes to believing it.

If it does keep the schools closed and my campus actually closes, I will be very thankful because I would rather stay home and finish up some work. But then again, I wouldn’t want to miss out on a full week of Italian class since we only have it once a week. We’ll have to see how things go.

2 Books Down, 5 To Go

January 26th, 2009

Earlier I went to the campus book store and one off campus book store to buy two very important books that I needed by tomorrow to do a few assignments. I paid around a $15 for both books which is outrageous and I still have to buy 5 more books.

My business law book is looking like the most expensive one costing a $185. Hopefully I won’t have to buy it and I can get the info from class and the internet. One can only hope. 2 down 5 to go.

I just wanted to update all of you guys on the Shoutcast tests that I have been doing since yesterday and it seems that it isn’t very resource consuming. I have run the shoutcast for a total of about 4 hours in 64kbps bitrate where it peaked to around 4 to 5 users and the bandwidth usage is under a 100mb which is amazing.

Hopefully it goes live by tomorrow night and we are ready for launch and hopefully we get our first sale soon after. Wish us luck.

Emergency Plane Landing in the Hudson River

January 15th, 2009

Earlier today a plane was landed during an emergency when two or so of their engines failed after sucking in a bird or two according to the news people. And the correct word is LANDED. I have been seeing many news reporters calling it a crash, it didn’t crash.

Good job to the Pilot for actually landing everyone safely. It must have been hectic.

Below is just one of the many articles already published on the internet regarding this issue:

NEW YORK - A US Airways jetliner crashed into the frigid Hudson River on Thursday afternoon after a flock of birds apparently disabled both its engines, but rescuers pulled the more than 150 passengers and crew members into boats before the plane sank.

After boats rushed to the rescue, the Federal Aviation Administration said that all passengers on US Airways Flight 1549 were off the plane and safe.

“We do not believe there are any serious injuries,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference Thursday evening, noting some were taken to hospitals in New Jersey. “The pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river and getting the passengers out.”

FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said the flight had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport en route to Charlotte, N.C., when the crash occurred in the river near 48th Street in New York City.

The plane, an Airbus 320, took off at 3:26 p.m. and went down minutes later, Brown said.

“There were eyewitness reports the plane may have flown into a flock of birds,” Brown said. She added, “right now we don’t have any indication this was anything other than an accident.”

Doug Church, spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said that the pilot reported a “double bird strike” about 30 to 45 seconds after takeoff and said he needed to return to LaGuardia.

The controller instructed the pilot to divert to an airport in Teterboro, N.J., for an emergency landing, Church said.

A passenger who identified himself as Jeff told NBC News the engines blew about 3 minutes into the flight. “Fire started blowing up,” he said. “I thought we would be able to circle around, but the captain said ‘brace for impact.’ … I think the captain did a helluva job.”

The plane was submerged in the icy waters up to the windows. Rescue crews opened the door and pulled passengers in yellow life vests from the plane. Rescue boats and commuter ferry boats that ply the Hudson surrounded the plane, which appeared to be slowly sinking in the near-freezing water. The temperature was around 20 degrees.

Witnesses said the plane’s pilot appeared to guide the plane down.

“I see a commercial airliner coming down, looking like it’s landing right in the water,” said Bob Read, who saw it from his office at the television newsmagazine “Inside Edition.” “This looked like a controlled descent.”

New York City firefighters and the Coast Guard worked to rescue the passengers. The fuselage appeared intact, and the plane appeared to be sitting high in the water well after the crash with rescuers standing on the wings once they reached the site.
